Abstract

Kim, Eunjung & Choe, Mun-Hong. (2025). Assessing individual differences in English language learning: Scale development and latent profile analysis. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 33(3), 1-20. This study aimed to develop a behaviorally anchored rating scale designed to examine individual differences in English language learning among Korean middle school students. A comprehensive review of prior research on individual difference factors in foreign language acquisition identified six core components: language aptitude, learning style, learning strategies, learning attitudes, learning motivation, and foreign language anxiety. Through consultations with a panel of experts, 171 behavioral indicators were initially collected. Subsequently, 11 teachers affiliated with a secondary English education research association reviewed the content validity of both the indicators and their performance levels, leading to the development of a rating scale consisting of 38 items. To validate the scale, a survey was administered to 491 middle school students. The analysis demonstrated that the scale met most of the validity criteria established in previous literature, confirming its potential as a practical tool in school settings. Furthermore, latent profile analysis conducted on the collected data revealed two distinct subgroups. These two groups differed significantly across all six factors, with particularly pronounced disparities in language aptitude and learning style.
