ÃÊ·Ï Cho, Youngsoon. (2018). Behavioral profiles of sentence adverbs of evaluation and attitude. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 26(3), 235-257. This paper aims to show the semantic structure of the near-synonymous English sentence adverbs surprisingly, amazingly, to DET surprise, and to DET amazement by examining their behaviors. The adverbs have been assumed to express a speakers evaluation of unexpectedness of the sentence content or an experiencers attitude of surprise at it. Investigating their behaviors with respect to registers, subject and verb combinations, and pre-positioned expressions, and employing the statistics of Gries (2004)s HCFA 3.2, two things are revealed. First, their principal functions are different: surprisingly expresses the speakers evaluation that the sentence content is unexpected; to DET surprise/amazement express the specified experiencers attitude of surprise at the sentence content; amazingly expresses both of the above without any clear preferences. Second, surprisingly and to DET surprise, which range wider on the scales of unexpectedness and surprise than do the other two, commonly co-occur with pre-positioned expressions and divide the range of scales. The semantic structure for the four expressions is presented, combining these findings and dictionary information.
