Yaang, Byungsun. (2018). The problem of and suggestion for the romanization of Korean vowels: based on one-syllable elementary school English words in the 2015 revised national curriculum. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 26(2), 293-313. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the problem of the writing of vowels in the current Korean romanization system revised on July 1, 2000 by Korean government, and to suggest an alternative. To do this, this paper studies the correspondence between the vowels of the current Korean romanization system and those of 499 one-syllable elementary school English words analyzed by Yaang and Lee (2017), and investigates the problem of the romanization of Korean vowels because the correspondence rate is only 29.6%. This paper shows that the syllable-based Korean romanization system proposed by Yaang (2011) is correct and suggests how to create such a wonderful Korean romanization system like Korean orthography of loanword. |
