ÃÊ·Ï Jeong, Jinhee. (2017). The Element-based Approach to Phonological Phenomena of Palatalization in Korean. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 25(1), 163-181. This study aims to elaborate Korean palatalization by employing Element Theory. Palatalization refers to the process of sound change that results in spreading of element £üI£ü. Vowel i/j(£üI£ü) trigger the change in which an alveolar£üI£üchanges into a palatal consonant £üI£ü, which is a sort of assimilation. In modern Korean, [tʃi] which is the collocation between onset£üI£üand vowel£üI£üis possible, but [tʃja], [tʃjə], or [tʃjo] are not. This is because of OCP which avoids the collision of onset£üI£üand glide £üI£ü. In other words, strong narrowing of glide£üI£üis similar to properties of onset. In this sense, this study examines palatalization by employing element £üI£üin a precise and logical way.
