Lim, Jeongwan. (2015). An Analysis of the Cultural Contents in High School English I Textbooks under the National Curriculum Revised in 2009. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 23(1), 183-202. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the cultural contents of Korean High School English I textbooks which are currently authorized on the basis of the 2009 revised national curriculum. A total of 8 authorized High School English I books are carefully examined, focusing on the cultural contents, by four categories: 1) the connection between the content of each unit and cultural pages 2) the topics of culture, 3) the types of culture and 4) cultural background countries. The results of the study are as follows. First, although many of the textbooks are along with the cultural pages, their contents still need consistency. Second, among 19 cultural topics, the most commonly used cultural topic is about creativity and imagination. Third, spiritual culture occupied more than 50 % of the topics in the English textbooks. Finally, in terms of cultural background nationality, universal culture showed the highest distribution in these books. Based on these findings, the study provides some pedagogical implications for cultural learning in English textbooks in Korea.
