Shin, Keun Young. (2023). Emergence of non-discriminatory English words in the 21st century. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 31(1), 25-44. This paper discusses how English words referring to the socially underprivileged or minorities in the 20th century can be accepted as non-discriminatory words in the 21 st century, focusing on bachelorette and intersex. The words bachelorette and intersex were rarely used in limited regions or genres when discrimination and prejudice against single women and intersex people were prevalent. The use of bachelorette and intersex has become increasingly necessary due to radical social changes regarding single women and intersex people in the 21st century. The words bachelorette and intersex avoid undergoing pejoration or being replaced by other new words because they have changed while reflecting the changes in English-speaking society and not going against the tendency to use gender-neutral language or people-first language. This paper suggests that even uncommon or potentially pejorative words can be widely used if their connotative meanings and uses are changed to reflect the needs of todays society.
